A Star Is Born ... How a Rotating Mirrored Star came to life

Seems like a memory or maybe it was a dream, Port Eliot always has that effect on us all … we are lucky to have it on our doorstep for so many reasons ……. best of all we love being involved and working behind the scenes. The imagination and thought that goes into this festival in it’s magnificent setting is awesome and leaves you reeling each year. So to be asked by Hush (one of my all time favourite clothing companies!) to come up with some ideas for their ‘Chill’ tent gave us lots of scope to run wild with our imagination! Essential Supplies have always loved the slight quirkiness of the Port Eliot Festival, supplying power and lighting solutions each year and this year was no different. We started with an ordinary specification from Hush for some illuminated hanging stars to be hung around their stand, but this was just a bit too simple for the Essential team! Simon had decided to offer Hush a Giant Rotating Star made of mosaic mirrors. Stephanie Dawson from the Marketing Department at Hush was very excited by the prospect who was delighted with this idea. Once again the challenge was set and Alex with a little help from Ewan, Gabby and Meg …….. got to it!
HOW A STAR WAS BORN ……………. The Star was hand made using wood & mosaic mirrors and spanned over 1M by 1M. A single M16 Eye Boltwas used as a slinging point.
Once the star was finished Ewan & Alex took it to the clearing in the woods where they used a very heavy rig consisting of 5mm wire rope and heavy duty gripples. This was slung between two large trees with a long piece of aluminium tube.
This gave the guys a sling point for the stars and Large Rotator. The star was highlighted using some source four junior zoom lights and for contrast LED colour changing units were fixed up in the trees above.
It looked amazing hung up in the trees slowly spinning catching the dappled sunlight on the leaves as well as reflecting all that was going on round it. By night time the stars really came into their own and did what stars do, giving a very ethereal feel to Hush’s chill zone. This mesmerising effect was enjoyed by thousands of festival goers.
Hush seemed thrilled with the star ……. It has stirred up lots of interest … sounds like everyone would like their very own star ……. Keeping Alex busy!!!
