A DI – Direct Injection or Direct Input – is a box which protects your signal from outside interference, so you get clearer sound from your equipment. It converts unbalanced, high impedance signal outputs from instruments into a more balanced, microphone-level signal that ensures you get the best from your instruments.

What is a DI?

A DI box is used to allow musicians to run a long cable from an instrument, such as an electric guitar or bass guitar, without losing signal quality or adding unwanted noise to your music. High impedance signals are more prone to noise, and it’s recommended that you keep cable lengths under 25ft to prevent this from happening. A DI resolves impedance mismatches from guitar pickups or sensitive studio electronics, so you can run instruments directly into microphone preamplifiers or send a signal over extended cable runs, without worrying about losing volume or clarity.

When To Use a DI

A DI box can be used in any live music event or recording session, where you need to ensure crisp sound without any interference or signal disturbance. Sound engineers may benefit from using a DI for live music to take the processed signal from the DI box and connect it to the mic level input on the mixing desk to provide sound to the front of house, or for the unprocessed sound to be routed to use for onstage monitoring. Whether you’re putting on a concert, a festival or a recording session, a DI can come in very useful to create crisp sounds.
