What are safety wires?
Safety wires are made from durable steel and are designed to be strong, fire-resistant and corrosion-resistant, so they’re as safe as possible. They often have copper ferrules on each end to protect the thimble eye, which is used as a connection point to prevent abrasion to the rope for added security. Safety wires are often treated with chromium with fire prevention and resistance in mind, and to ensure they can be used safely in wet and dry conditions. Galvanised steel is treated with a zinc coating, but it is a more cost-effective option because they don’t have the addition of chromium. Steel safety cables can also be referred to as safety bonds and are a common feature of lighting set-ups and the theatre and stage industries, where rigging lighting effects are needed.
When To use safety wires
Safety wires, or safety bonds, are in place to provide a secondary, flexible connection along with the regular fixings, but they can be used in a variety of applications, such as a retaining cable or a tether. For businesses in the entertainment industry, from live music venues to theatre shows, safety wires are an essential item of equipment that can be used in numerous ways. They can be used to create a strong and secure connection for everything from speaker units and trussing to rigging and other secure mountings.
